What are Eco (ZBE) Low Emission Zone Stickers for driving in Spain and how to get one
We know there has been a lot of talk about Eco Stickers and Low Emission Zones since the Environmental Protection Law came into effect. We're here to help answer some of the most common questions you might have. Check them out below!
What are Low Emission Zones?
Low Emission Zones (LEZ), or Zonas de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE) in Spanish, are areas where only the least polluting vehicles are allowed to drive. Vehicles that enter these zones incorrectly will be subject to a fine of 200 euros!
Do all towns and cities have Low Emission Zones?
Low Emission Zones (LEZs) have been in place in big cities like Madrid and Barcelona for quite some time. With the introduction of the Environmental Protection Law of 2023, all towns and cities in Spain, with more than 50,000 people, already have or are implementing Low Emission Zones to combat environmental and acoustic pollution.
What is the Eco Sticker?
The Eco sticker tells you how good your car is when it comes to saving energy, being environment-friendly, and not polluting the air.
Are Eco Stickers mandatory in Spain?
No, the Eco sticker is not mandatory. It is a voluntary initiative; however, if you want to drive in a low-emission zone, displaying the Eco Sticker is mandatory.
Where can I get the Eco Sticker?
The most convenient and simple way to obtain your Eco Sticker is by visiting the Correos (Post Office) and paying €5. You will need to bring your driver's license, ID, and vehicle documents with you. Alternatively, you can purchase the sticker online on the official DGT website here for €6.50.
Which Eco sticker do I need?
You can visit the DGT website here and type in your vehicle's registration number; you will be able to find out what emissions classification it has. But you do not need to worry about this; the issuing office knows which sticker to give you based on the details in your vehicle document.
Where do I put the Eco Sticker?
The Eco Sticker should be placed on the lower right-hand corner of the windshield on the inside of your vehicle. Place the Eco Sticker in the most visible location for motorbikes without windscreens or limited space.
If you're relocating to Spain and planning to drive from the UK or any other country, it's important to check beforehand if you need to obtain country-specific stickers for the places you'll be travelling through. Doing so will help ensure that your journey is hassle-free.
