Primary and Secondary schools in Javea, Costa Blanca Spain 2023.
If you are making the exciting move to Javea on the Costa Blanca with your kids, finding a school where they feel happy and confident is a top priority. Thanks to the vibrant expat community in Javea and its surroundings, you have some great options to explore. You can decide whether you want your child to experience one of the local state-run Spanish schools or perhaps follow the British curriculum at one of the fee-paying international schools.
State-run public schools in Spain are government-regulated and free. It is worth noting that education is mandatory in Spain from ages 6 to 16. Both state Spanish schools and international schools can accommodate children from the age of 3 all the way up to 18.
For the little ones, pre-school, also known as 'infantil,' begins in September of the year the child turns 3 years old.
When they are a bit older, from ages 6 to 11, they attend primary school, often referred to as 'Centro de Educación Infantil y Primaria (CEIP),' but you will commonly hear it simply called 'Colegio' or 'Cole.'
For students aged 11 to 16, they enrol in public secondary education, known as 'Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria (IES)' or just 'Instituto.'
