Beaches and bays/playas and calas in Javea
Javea is famed for its picturesque beaches and bays, and people travel from all over the world to visit. The stunning coastline of Javea is rich with crystal clear waters, rocky coves, and Mediterranean vegetation, of which the locals and visitors alike are enormously proud and protective.
So good, even Hollywood wanted a piece of the action; Bruce Willis played the leading role in ‘The Cold Light of Day’, filmed in Cala Granadella. Also, Vogue España featured an article about Javea, titled ‘Forget the Caribbean, everything you need is in Javea’ - and they were right. Just a selection to whet the appetite...
Playa del Arenal
The Playa del Arenal is a beautiful sandy beach with a wide promenade lined with shops, bars, and restaurants. It is a popular area for families with young children and teenagers, offering a variety of water sports such as boat hire, jet skis, diving centres, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and pedalos. The beach also features volleyball and football pitches, as well as small playgrounds for younger children.
Entertainment options include nightclubs, restaurants, and bars with live music or international TV. The area offers a diverse range of international cuisine, clothing boutiques, market stalls, and food shops. Behind the Arenal, there are additional shops, banks, many more restaurants, and opportunities for sports and entertainment, such as tennis clubs and go-karting. Further inland, there are several first-class golf courses.
Playa de la Grava
A Blue Flag beach, La Grava is a small yet stunning pebbly beach that is great for snorkelling and swimming. The water here is calm and crystal clear! It is beside a wide and sunny promenade full of shops, bars, and restaurants where you can sit and relax, meet friends, or simply watch the world go by over a coffee or glass of wine.
Cala de la Granadella
Another Blue Flag beach in Javea, Cala de la Granadella, is picture-perfect! One of the most beautiful beaches on the Spanish coastline, it is in the southernmost part of Javea and is without a doubt the most well-known of the Javea beaches, and with good reason. It is a rustic cove with crystal-clear waters, ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.
Top tip: It is best to arrive early in the peak season for a good spot.
Cala de la Barraca
Also known as La Cala Portitxol (Portichol), is a natural cove with a mixture of gravel, pebbles, and rocks. It is situated between Cap Prim and Cap Negre and can be accessed by car from Cabo de la Nao or on foot from the Mirador de la Cruz del Portichol.
Top tip: In front of the cove lies Isla del Portichol (Portichol Island), which is of great botanical and archaeological interest and is highly recommended for scuba diving.
Player del Primer y Segundo Montañar, Javea.
Player del Primer y Segundo Montañar – Rocky beaches that link Cala Blanca to the Arenal and the Arenal to the La Grava in the Port, popular in the summer for ‘chiringuitos’ – ‘pop up’ beach bars. The locals flock here in the evenings armed with tables and chairs, and it’s a fantastic spot to watch the sensational fireworks launched from the sea every September in honour of the Mare de Déu de Loreto, patron saint of the sea.
Cala Sardinera, Javea.
A small pebbly cove, Cala Sardinera is one of the most difficult to access, which means it has retained its original charm. With pedestrian access from the Cruz de Portichol via a steep trail, this picturesque beach rarely gets busy.
Cala Blanca, Javea.
Or La Caleta, is two adjacent coves of gravel and pebbles with characteristic white rock, hence the name. Popular with the locals, the water is crystal clear, and the shallow areas make it perfect for families and children.
Top tip: Great for snorkelling and diving!
