10-Apr-2019

Easter is near approaching and although San Sebastián is the patron saint of Xàbia, the Fiestas in honor of Jesús Nazareno are the ones with the greatest popular roots and for which the locals show greater devotion.

The image of the Jesús Nazareno remains guarded in the ‘la ermita del Calvario’ until the third Sunday of Lent, when via a procession, it is lowered to the Church of San Bartolomé. Here it remains honoured until 3rd May when again via a procession it is returned to ‘la ermita del Calvario’ and followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Throughout the Easter celebrations you will find the traditional (and often controversial) ‘bous al carrer’ (entrance of bulls and cows in the street) plus theatres, monologues, parades and live music. On 2nd May it is traditional to walk through the streets of Javea old town to view the colourful May crosses made with flowers by the neighbours and then awarded on originality and beauty.
